About Heather

img_3385 I am passionate about expectant families, health (mind, heart, body and spirit!) and I love spending time in nature. When I am not busy doula-ing/teaching, you can find me with my amazing family (which includes the coolest Labrador Retriever in the world!) hiking in the redwoods, at the beach, meditating or reading from my huge pile of spiritual and health books.

Experience- I have two girls born in 2000 and 2003. (I’ve been married happily since 1995.) I breastfed them for a total of 23 months. My first daughter and I struggled with nursing, which taught me loads about helping new moms.  My second daughter and I were experts at breastfeeding.

When my second daughter was 15 months old I was diagnosed with a postpartum mood disorder- anxiety. It took me many years, with a lot of experimenting with techniques before I feel I became fully recovered. I use this experience and knowledge to prevent this disorder and to guide moms to health when it does happen. Being a mom is the ultimate experience!

I have worked with families and children since 1992 in various capacities. I started out as a preschool teacher, then a director of an after school program, and lastly a nanny.

After my first was born, I became curious and passionate about birth and began my training in the field. By the time my second daughter was born I had changed career directions and started teaching classes to expectant families in 2003. I have taught at hospitals DSC_0225and free standing education centers, now I only teach for my own company which gives me the freedom to share everything I know with you.

Clients in my classes started asking me if I would come to their birth and help them out- obviously I started saying yes. Then I found out I could get paid to go to births and decided to train as a doula. A hospital based midwifery group took me under their wings and my learning expanded substantially. I have attended 200+ births as a birth doula, mostly in hospitals. I know the South Bay Area hospitals well, I incorporate this knowledge into my classes. I have worked with 47 families as a postpartum doula. I know what you really need in the postpartum period for yourself and baby.

DSC_0202Philosophy/Mission The journey to parenthood is filled with constant discovery and transformation. Through this journey I encourage parents to listen to their inner wisdom. Trusting your ability to be pregnant, to labor and birth, to parent; trusting your baby to communicate, learn, and grow with you, are all essential in creating a healthy and rewarding experience.

My goal is to provide you with accurate information/resources that may help guide you in discovering, planning, and creating the right birth and parenting style for yourself/family. Remember that there is no one right way for everyone. Giving birth and parenting is a process of learning, self discovery, and a joyous adventure. I wish you well for this new path you are on!
